Making Dialysis Safer For Patients Coalition

The Making Dialysis Safer for Patients Coalition is a partnership of organizations and individuals that have joined forces with the common goal of promoting the use of CDC’s core interventions(https://www.cdc.gov/dialysis/prevention-tools/core-interventions.html) and resources to prevent dialysis bloodstream infections. Launched in September 2016, the Coalition’s goals are to:

Our SANITIZER

Instant Hand Sanitizer Gel is very effective at reducing bacteria on the skin, yet very gentle on the skin and eyes as the Toxicity Profile below indicates:

  • Toxicity Profile
  • Our Sanitizer Instant Hand Sanitizer Gel
  • Acute Oral LD50 >5.0 g/kg, Category IV
  • Acute Dermal LD50 >2.0 g/kg, Category III
  • Eye Irritation Category III
  • Skin Irritation Category IV
  • Sensitization Not a Skin Sensitizer

Our Sanitizer Gel, based on the active ingredient Benzalkonium Chloride, is a unique gel formulation that features exceptional skin feel, conditioning and moisturizing properties. The efficacy of this product has been confirmed to reduce S. aureus 99.999% in as little as 15 seconds.

A wash off Benzalkonium Chloride offering in the ranges of 0.1-0.13% is recognized under the 1994 TFM for Antiseptic Drug Products when making claims against bacteria. Its leave-on or hand sanitizer use without a rinse is recognized and covered by the OTC Drug Review for antiseptic hand wash, healthcare-personnel hand wash and surgical scrub uses, with the through requisite prior evidence of it being marketed for a material time and extent prior to December 1975 in the United States for these uses. Therefore, until a final antiseptic monograph is issued and establishes Benzalkonium Chloride in Category I or Category II its (0.1-0.13%) remains in Category III and is allowed to be marketed as a wash-off (rinse) offering per the TFM or as a leave on because of being in the market prior to December 1975, i.e. Bactine®, developed in 1947 and introduced in 1950.

Why Benzalkonium chloride-based Hand Sanitizers?

History- Benzalkonium chloride is an alcohol-free antimicrobial compound that has been widely used in the health care industry for more than 60 years in formulas for preservatives, surface cleaners, sterilizing agents, and leave-on, FDA Monograph anti-bacterial skin treatment products. The chemical properties of benzalkonium chloride make it a good candidate for persistent antimicrobial activity in mammalian tissue.  The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert panel concludes that benzalkonium chloride is safe as a cosmetic ingredient at 0.1%.

What are the advantages of Benzalkonium chloride-based over Alcohol-based Hand Sanitizers?

Benzalkonium chloride-based Hand Sanitizers have several distinct advantages over alcohol-based hand sanitizers. While both product forms are FDA Monograph for leave-on products, fast acting and allow for use without water or towels, benzalkonium chloride-based products are non-flammable, non-damaging to skin, are persistent, and will not stain clothing or flooring.

Our laundry program provides a tool to treat laundry in industrial and home systems. BioProtect is the most used antimicrobial in the clothing industry.  It inhibits 99.99% of bacteria on all types of cloth. BioProtect greatly increases the level of clean in healthcare settings.

BioProtect’s unique mechanical mechanism of action destroys odor and stain-causing microbes.  This unique biostatic product provides a residual protective barrier that extends the life of treated goods.  It enhances hydrophobic characteristics without using poisons, toxins or heavy metals.  This cost- effective system will provide a biostatic barrier to keep bacteria, fungi, algae and yeast from treated cloth.  It creates persistently clean sheets, blankets and uniforms.

Bacteria traditionally feed off discarded skin cells and oils that are absorbed into clothing fibers or that reside on clothing surfaces. It weakens the material.  BioProtect is an inhospitable barrier for microbes. Clothing fibers are better preserved, thus increasing the useful life of a garment.

When applied to standard dividing curtains, which separate patients in healthcare, the result is a material that acts as a substantial biological barrier.

Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs) cost $5-7,000 per incident and even higher.  A standard, 400-bed facility will have about 1,600 HAIs annually, costing an estimated $8 million.  CMS is currently not paying for infection 30 day returns with infections.

  • Dependable mechanical inhibition
  • BioProtect is an organic molecule
  • No poisons
  • No heavy metals
  • No toxins
  • Non-leaching
  • Safe to use 40 years of use with no adverse litigation resulting from harm to patients

SANDERS FILTERS

Pathogens have been shown to spread through the air over long distances, even through the HVAC system. This recently discovered transmission route is explained and clearly documented in the ASHRAE Position Paper, “Indoor Infectious Disease”, 2009.   This groundbreaking document provides the latest studies, and names specific disease like Influenza that have been proven to be spread via this airborne route.  Contributing to this problem, submicron particles have little to no weight and therefore nominal gravitational pull. They move on the wind, acting more like a gas than a particle, and remaining suspended almost indefinitely. HVAC filters currently used in most systems were designed to protect the coil from dirt rather than to filter submicron pathogens from the air.  Submicron, permanently suspended particles, are pulled into the HVAC system through the return vents, mixed at the coil and redistributed to all rooms. Through this process diseases are spread.

The Sanders Containment Filter was designed to filter submicron particles as they enter the HVAC system. After installing these filters over all return vents, the submicron particles are trapped and held in the media to prevent the mixing and redistributing of particles the size of known pathogens to other rooms. The design provides high efficiency media upstream of the existing holding frames that completely seals, with no bypass, thereby eliminating the need to retrofit the old frames that that do not completely seal.

The total protection system can be configured for various levels to capture submicron particles and gases.  The gasket duct frame system eliminates filter bypass, thus ensuring that the filters operate at rated capacity.

Never before in the history of air filtration has it been possible to filter at the sub-micron level without making extensive changes to HVAC systems.  The Sanders Containment Filter provides for affordable, low-cost and high-end filtration for hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, pharmacies, clean rooms, schools, business and homes.  Anywhere people live, work and play submicron filtration should be used.
